Clashes Erupt in Minneapolis as Anti-ICE Protesters Confront Right-Wing Activist

Tensions ran high in Minneapolis on Saturday as anti-ICE protesters clashed with a prominent right-wing activist, Jake Lang, who had called for supporters to meet him in the city to “Support ICE” and confront what he termed a “Muslim takeover.” The event, which came less than two weeks after a surge of federal agents were deployed to the city as part of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, saw hundreds of counterprotesters gather at City Hall to oppose Lang and his followers.

A History of Controversy

Lang, who spent four years in prison for his role in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6 before being pardoned by President Trump, has a history of promoting divisive rhetoric. His call to action in Minneapolis was met with resistance from local communities, who argue that his views are not only misguided but also dangerous. The city has been on edge following the killing of Renee Good by an ICE agent and the wounding of a Venezuelan man by a federal agent several days later.

Confrontation and Intervention

As Lang and his group of about 20 supporters arrived at City Hall, they were met with a sea of counterprotesters. The situation quickly escalated, with snowballs and water balloons being thrown at Lang’s group, who defended themselves by throwing punches. In a surprising turn of events, an individual in the crowd, Raafat Haj, stepped in to intervene and help lead Lang out of the crowd, citing a desire to protect everyone involved. Haj, a Muslim, stated that he did not support Lang’s views but believed in protecting human life and preventing further conflict.

Aftermath and Future Plans

Following the protests, Lang and his supporters fled Minneapolis, with Lang announcing plans to hold another rally in Washington, D.C. next month. The city of Minneapolis is bracing for continued unrest, with hundreds of additional troops on standby to deploy. The situation highlights the deep divisions within the country and the need for constructive dialogue and understanding.
