Reflecting on the Past Year and Looking Forward to 2026 in Film

As we bid farewell to 2025 and welcome 2026, it’s natural to reflect on the past year and anticipate what’s to come. For film enthusiasts, this time of year is particularly exciting, with new releases and upcoming projects generating buzz. I’m Glenn Whipp, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and host of The Envelope newsletter, and I’m here to share my thoughts on the year that was and the year that will be.

On New Year’s Eve, while some were enjoying fried chicken and a $45 bottle of sparkling wine, I was contemplating the state of the film industry. It’s a time for looking back and looking forward, and I’m contractually obligated to do just that. As we take stock of the past year, it’s clear that some films exceeded expectations, while others fell short. Celine Song’s “Materialists,” for example, was a movie I was looking forward to, but it received mixed reviews and even sparked debates about late-stage capitalism.

Anticipated Movies of 2026

Every year, I’m asked to contribute to a list of anticipated movies, and this year is no exception. After careful consideration, I’ve selected three films that I’m excited to see in 2026. These choices are based on the directors’ track records and the potential for compelling storytelling. The first film on my list is “Disclosure Day,” directed by Steven Spielberg and written by David Koepp. With a prime summer release date and an intriguing premise, this sci-fi thriller has all the ingredients for a blockbuster hit.

Another film I’m looking forward to is “The Adventures of Cliff Booth,” directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt. As a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood,” this movie has the potential to be a thrilling ride. With Fincher at the helm, known for his work on “Se7en” and “Fight Club,” I’m optimistic about the film’s prospects. The 1977 setting will also provide a fascinating glimpse into Los Angeles’ past, making it a must-see for fans of the city and its history.

Last but not least, I’m eager to see Robert Eggers’ “Werwulf,” a medieval werewolf movie that promises to be the “darkest thing” the director has ever written. With a talented cast, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Willem Dafoe, this film is sure to be a chilling experience. Eggers’ track record, including “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse,” suggests that “Werwulf” will be a masterpiece of atmospheric tension and horror.

While it’s impossible to predict with certainty which films will succeed, these three movies have the potential to make a significant impact in 2026. Of course, there are always surprises, and some films may exceed expectations while others fall short. But for now, I’m excited to see what the new year has in store for film enthusiasts.
