The Baffling Case of the Texas Teen Who Stabbed His Twin Sister
In a shocking and tragic incident, 17-year-old Benjamin Elliott stabbed his twin sister Meghan to death in their home in the early morning hours of September 29, 2021. What makes this case even more astonishing is that Benjamin claimed he was sleepwalking at the time of the stabbing. The incident has left the family, investigators, and the community searching for answers, and a recent investigation by “48 Hours” has shed more light on the extraordinary case.
According to the investigation, Benjamin’s family and friends described him and Meghan as incredibly close, and no one could imagine a scenario where he would harm her. In fact, a longtime family friend, Drue Whittecar, told “48 Hours” that “He and Meghan are so close, you could never picture anything bad happening between them.” The prosecutors, Megan Long and Maroun Koutani, also found no evidence of any problems between the twins, which makes the incident even more puzzling.
Uncovering the Truth Behind the Tragedy
The Elliotts initially suspected that a mental health crisis might have contributed to the tragedy, but it was later discovered that Benjamin and some of his close relatives had a history of sleepwalking. A neurologist and sleep disorder expert, Dr. Jerald Simmons, was called in to examine Benjamin and conducted two sleep studies on him. After reviewing the results, Simmons concluded that Benjamin fell quickly into slow-wave sleep, a state in which people can sleepwalk, and likely stabbed Meghan unintentionally.
Simmons’ findings were surprising, but they have been supported by previous cases where sleepwalking has been used as a successful defense in criminal trials. For example, a Canadian man, Kenneth Parks, was acquitted of killing his mother-in-law after claiming he was sleepwalking at the time of the incident. Similarly, a North Carolina father, Joseph Mitchell, was found not guilty of strangling one of his children after saying he was sleepwalking during the killing.
The Investigation and Trial
Despite the new evidence, prosecutors were still not convinced that Benjamin was sleepwalking at the time of the stabbing. They questioned his account of the night, his demeanor during an interrogation, and the fact that he claimed to have stabbed his sister only once, despite the medical examiner finding two wounds on Meghan’s neck. As a result, Benjamin was charged with intentionally murdering his twin and stood trial earlier this year.
The case has been a heartbreaking and unimaginable ordeal for the Elliotts, who have lost their daughter and now face the possibility of losing their son.
