All quiet at Camp Kaprizov as preseason rolls on for Wild

Date:

Minnesota Wild’s Contract Extension Talks with Kirill Kaprizov Remain Uncertain

As the first full week of training camp commences, the Minnesota Wild and their fans are eagerly awaiting news on the contract extension talks with star forward Kirill Kaprizov. However, neither Kaprizov’s agent, Paul Theofanous, nor Wild general manager Bill Guerin has provided any updates on the negotiations. The lack of information has left fans wondering if Kaprizov will remain with the team beyond July 2026, when his current contract expires.

Theofanous reportedly visited Minnesota last week and had a lengthy conversation with a member of the Wild’s hockey operations department during a training camp scrimmage at TRIA Rink. Despite this meeting, neither side has disclosed any details about the discussion or potential progress in the contract talks. Kaprizov, meanwhile, has been a full participant in training camp, showcasing his dedication to the team and his craft.

Kaprizov’s Current Status and Upcoming Preseason Games

Kaprizov has been skating with the team and has even resumed his habit of staying on the ice after practice for extra shots and drills. However, he did not travel to Winnipeg for the Wild’s preseason opening game against the Jets and will not be part of the team that faces the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. The Stars will visit the Wild on Thursday, marking the team’s first home game of the preseason and their first game at the newly renamed Grand Casino Arena.

In a recent meeting with reporters, Kaprizov expressed his affection for Minnesota, his teammates, and the fans, referring to the state as his “second home” after Russia. When questioned about his contract talks, he deferred to his agent, emphasizing that he remains under contract with the Wild until July 1, 2026. “We have a lot of time, it’s just 2025,” Kaprizov said. “It’s one more year I have.”

Roster Moves and Updates

The Wild has reduced their training camp roster to 52 players and signed goalie Chase Wutzke to a three-year entry-level contract. Wutzke, a 19-year-old butterfly goalie, was selected by the Wild in the fifth round of the 2024 NHL Draft. He has been assigned to the Red Deer Rebels of the Canadian major junior leagues, where he has played since 2022. Forwards Lirim Amidovski, Adam Benak, and Carter Klippenstein have also been assigned to major junior leagues, while defensemen Rowan Topp and Jordan Tourigny have been released.

The Wild has also sent several players to Iowa Wild training camp, including forward Matthew Sop, Ryan McGuire, and goalie William Rousseau. As the preseason continues, fans will be keeping a close eye on the team’s roster moves and, of course, any updates on Kaprizov’s contract situation. For the latest news and updates, visit Here
