Angels wrestle in opposition to Cristian Javier in shutout loss to Astros

Astros Secure 2-0 Win Over Angels with Strong Pitching Performance

The Houston Astros earned a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night, thanks to a stellar pitching performance from Cristian Javier and three relievers. Javier, who underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2024, pitched six hitless innings, striking out six and walking three while throwing 85 pitches. This outing marked his fourth start of the season and demonstrated his impressive recovery.

Javier’s performance was relieved by Enyel De Los Santos, who gave up a double to Yoán Moncada for the Angels’ first hit of the game. However, De Los Santos secured the win, and Kaleb Ort earned a four-out save, his first of the season, after relieving Craig Kimbrel in the eighth. Kimbrel walked three and threw eight strikes in 25 pitches, but Ort secured a fly out from Jo Adell to end the eighth and finished with a perfect ninth.

Astros’ Bats Come Alive in Seventh and Eighth Innings

The Astros broke the scoreless tie in the seventh inning with an RBI single from Carlos Correa, scoring Yordan Alvarez. This hit came after the Astros were 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position. Alvarez drove in a second run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Cam Smith, who walked earlier in the inning. The key moment in the game came when Alvarez reached first base on a fielding error by second baseman Christian Moore, allowing him to score after advancing on a bloop single from Jose Altuve.

Javier’s six no-hit innings are tied for the second-longest no-hit outing of his career, matching a nine-strikeout performance in the 2022 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. His career-best no-hit outing was a seven-inning performance against the New York Yankees on June 25, 2022. The Astros will look to continue their winning streak as they send RHP Spencer Arrighetti to the mound against Angels RHP Kyle Hendricks on Saturday.
