Annunciation Catholic School Resumes On-Campus Activities After Tragic Mass Shooting
The Annunciation parish and school community is taking its first steps towards healing and recovery following a devastating mass shooting that claimed the lives of two children and injured 17 people, with one still hospitalized. The school has announced that it will be resuming some of its on-campus activities, focusing on providing a safe and supportive environment for its students and staff.
According to a news release, the school will be offering programming centered around “support, connection, and play” for students of all grades, starting from Tuesday through Thursday. This initiative aims to provide a sense of normalcy and comfort for the students, while also acknowledging the need for ongoing support and healing.
A Community United in Grief and Support
The Annunciation community has been overwhelmed with love and support from its neighbors and the wider community, with many gathering to mourn the loss of the two children, Fletcher Merkel, 8, and Harper Moyski, 10. The community has also come together to advocate for legislative action on gun control, highlighting the need for meaningful change to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
The Washburn Center for Children and the Minnesota Department of Education will be providing resources and support to students and staff on campus, with a visible security presence remaining throughout the week. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that the school community feels safe and supported as they navigate this difficult time.
A Path Forward, with Caution and Sensitivity
While the school is taking steps towards resuming its activities, it is doing so with caution and sensitivity. Staff and school leaders will not be engaging in interviews or press events during this time, and members of the press have been asked not to visit the campus. This decision reflects the school’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being and privacy of its students and staff.
As the school looks to the future, it will be taking a phased approach to reopening, with a focus on providing ongoing support and resources to its community. While there are currently no firm plans for the week of September 22nd and beyond, the school will share updates with its families, staff, and the wider community as more information becomes available.
