Austin Beutner Launches Mayoral Campaign with a Focus on Fighting Injustices

Former Los Angeles schools Supt. Austin Beutner has officially kicked off his campaign for mayor, releasing a four-minute campaign video that criticizes not only Mayor Karen Bass but also President Trump and his immigration crackdown. Beutner, a Democrat and former investment banker, describes Los Angeles as a city “under attack” and vows to counter the injustices carried out by the Trump administration.

The video features footage of U.S. Border Patrol agents and highlights Beutner’s commitment to keeping every person safe and building a better Los Angeles. Beutner states, “I’ll never accept the Trump administration’s assault on our values and our neighbors. Targeting people solely based on the color of their skin is unacceptable and un-American.” The White House has not responded to inquiries about Beutner’s video, but a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson previously denied claims of racial profiling, calling them “disgusting and categorically FALSE.”

Beutner’s Background and Experience

The video also delves into Beutner’s personal story, describing a major biking accident that led him to enter public service and take a different path. Beutner became Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s “jobs czar” and worked on various initiatives, including providing eye exams and glasses to children in low-income communities through his nonprofit Vision to Learn. He also highlights his work in shepherding L.A. Unified through the COVID-19 pandemic and supporting arts education in California public schools.

Beutner’s campaign video also critiques City Hall, citing high housing costs, rising parking meter rates, and increased trash pickup fees for homeowners and smaller apartment buildings. He calls Los Angeles a city that is “adrift” and criticizes Mayor Bass’s approach to reducing homelessness, stating, “The city spent billions to solve problems that have just become bigger problems.” The Bass campaign has pushed back on these criticisms, citing decreases in violent crime and homelessness.

A Focus on Immigration and Social Justice

Beutner’s criticism of Trump’s immigration crackdown echoes messages delivered by Mayor Bass several months ago, when federal agents were seizing street vendors, day laborers, and other workers in L.A. The Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of the Trump administration, allowing immigration agents to stop and detain individuals suspected of being in the U.S. illegally based on factors such as speaking Spanish or having brown skin. Beutner’s campaign video vows to fight against such injustices and work towards a more equitable and just Los Angeles.

As the mayoral campaign heats up, Beutner’s focus on social justice and immigration issues is likely to resonate with many Los Angeles residents. With his experience in public service and his commitment to fighting injustices, Beutner is positioning himself as a strong contender in the mayoral race.
