Legendary Fashion Designer Bob Mackie Reflects on His Career
Bob Mackie, a renowned fashion and costume designer, has been dressing stars like Cher, Tina Turner, and Madonna for decades. His glamorous designs have been featured on red carpets, concert stages, and even album covers. Recently, Taylor Swift wore one of Mackie’s creations in several photos for her album, “The Life of a Showgirl.” The costume, which was designed over 40 years ago for a Las Vegas show in the 1980s, was borrowed from a casino in Vegas.
Mackie was surprised to see his design featured in Swift’s album, stating, “It was kind of a surprise because I didn’t know she had those clothes.” He explained that his design process involves sketching, but also watching the stars he works with perform. “My philosophy is watch what they do, how they work on stage, how they walk, how they sit,” he said. “It is very important. You can’t just put a dress on anybody.”
Working with Legendary Performers
Mackie has had the opportunity to work with some of the most iconic performers in the industry, including Tina Turner and Cher. He reflected on his experiences working with these legends, stating, “You just don’t know until you meet them and watch them perform that they’re that woman, that kind of a girl.” He described Cher as never being intimidated by his designs, while Turner was always aware of what she wanted and would often make adjustments to the costumes.
Auctioning Off Iconic Designs
Some of Mackie’s most iconic designs are set to be auctioned off in December. When asked about the auction, Mackie stated, “It’s OK. I don’t have it at home waiting for me. It’s just there and the girls kind of like seeing somebody else wear it. That’s fun.” His designs have been featured in various exhibitions and museums, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.
