U.S. Border Patrol Agent Dies While Facing Charges of Drunkenly Attacking Long Beach Police

A U.S. Border Patrol agent, Isaiah Hodgson, 29, has died, according to officials. Hodgson’s death was confirmed by Natlain Daldalian, communications director for the L.A. County Public Defender’s Office, which was representing him on charges of resisting arrest and battery against a peace officer. The cause of death has not been reported, and Daldalian requested that the media “respect his family’s privacy during this time.”

Hodgson had been involved in a high-profile incident in June, where he played a role in the detention of Adrian Martinez, a U.S. citizen, who was accused of interfering with immigration arrests at a Walmart in Pico Rivera. Martinez’s defense attorneys reported that agents, including Hodgson, rushed Martinez and shoved him to the ground after he confronted them as they tried to arrest one of his co-workers. Footage from the scene showed officers dragging Martinez to a truck, and he was later indicted on a charge of conspiring to impede a federal officer.

Incident with Long Beach Police

About three weeks after the incident with Martinez, Hodgson was involved in a separate incident at a restaurant in the Shoreline Village area of Long Beach. According to a statement from the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, Hodgson was “off-duty, intoxicated and armed with a handgun” when he approached a female in the women’s restroom. The woman complained to restaurant staff, which asked Hodgson to leave because guns were not allowed inside the eatery. When Long Beach police responded to the scene and tried to detain him, Hodgson fought with officers and was eventually subdued with a stun gun.

Prosecutors charged Hodgson with three counts of resisting arrest, one count of battery causing injury to a police officer, and several misdemeanor weapons offenses. He was due back in court in late September, but his death has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his passing. Both the district attorney’s office and Long Beach police referred questions to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, which has not provided additional information.

Background and Experience

Public records show that Hodgson once lived in Hemet, and he had played a visible role in the Trump administration’s intensive immigration enforcement efforts in Southern California over the last few months. His experience and involvement in high-profile incidents have raised concerns about the use of force and the treatment of individuals by border patrol agents. As the investigation into his death continues, more information may come to light about the circumstances surrounding his passing.
