Bryan Norcross: Fall-like chilly entrance will maintain off any storms for now

Hurricane Season Update: A Brief Respite Before Potential Storms

A cold front is pushing south and will lodge over Florida for the next week, bringing a welcome break from the intense hurricane activity. The accompanying unusually strong dip in the jet stream that’s driving the front south will also steer any developing storms to the north, well offshore of the U.S. East Coast. This means that the East Coast can expect a relatively calm period, with minimal threat of hurricane landfalls.

However, it’s essential to note that this calm period is not expected to last. There’s some indication that an area of low pressure might try to form along the old front in a week or so, which could potentially develop into a storm. Additionally, disturbances are forecast to move off Africa, as is typical for this time of year, but the dry air and hostile weather pattern are expected to prevent any significant development for the next week at least.

Long-Term Outlook: No Reason to Expect a Quiet Second Half

While the current calm period may lead some to believe that the second half of the hurricane season will be quiet, there is no reason to think that this will be the case. As we saw last year, when the switch gets flipped back on, things can escalate quickly. Most likely, significant development won’t restart until the second week or maybe the middle of September, but it’s essential to remain vigilant and monitor the situation closely.

Tropical Storm Fernand is expected to become fully non-tropical tonight as it heads off into the North Atlantic, which will help to reduce the current storm activity. For now, it’s essential to enjoy the calm period and use it as an opportunity to prepare for potential future storms.
