Chip Kelly’s New Chapter: A Consolation Prize at Northwestern

Chip Kelly’s decision to join Northwestern as the team’s new offensive coordinator has raised eyebrows in the football community. Just a month after being fired by the Las Vegas Raiders, Kelly is taking on a new challenge in the Big Ten. However, this move can be seen as a consolation prize for the coach, who was once calling plays for the prolific Ohio State offense. Kelly’s departure from Ohio State was a surprise, and his decision to jump to the NFL ultimately led to his downfall.

A Fall from Grace

Kelly’s tenure in the NFL has been marked by mediocrity, with stints as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles yielding underwhelming results. His time at UCLA as head coach from 2018 to 2023 was also unremarkable. The Raiders’ decision to fire Kelly after a 2-9 start, including a dismal 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns, was not surprising. Kelly’s play-calling magic, which was evident during his time at Ohio State, failed to translate in the NFL.

Kelly’s response to his firing was characteristically brief, stating, “Hey, we gotta win. I get it.” This lack of sentiment is consistent with his reputation as a man of few words. Despite his struggles in the NFL, Kelly’s reputation as an innovative offensive mind has endured, and his hiring at Northwestern is seen as a coup for the program.

A New Opportunity

Northwestern coach David Braun is enthusiastic about Kelly’s arrival, citing his “innovative approach to offense” and “track record of developing quarterbacks.” Braun believes that Kelly’s expertise will be a “program-defining change” and a key factor in the team’s pursuit of championships. Kelly’s experience at Oregon, where he led the team to a 46-7 record from 2009 to 2012, is a major factor in his hiring.

Kelly expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to join Northwestern, stating, “I am honored to join the Northwestern Football program. This program and university are clearly on the rise, and the values of the people and this place align with my own.” As he begins his new chapter, Kelly will be tasked with revitalizing a Northwestern offense that ranked 98th in the FBS in total offense and 15th in the Big Ten in points per game this season.
