Massive “No Kings” Protests Erupt Across the US, Condemning Trump’s Policies

Crowds of protesters gathered in cities and towns across the United States on Saturday, participating in “No Kings” protests to express their outrage over President Trump’s policies. The demonstrations, which were planned in all 50 states, aimed to condemn the president’s actions, including his crackdown on undocumented migrants and deployment of National Guard troops to various cities. According to organizers, over 2,700 demonstrations were planned, with millions of attendees expected.

The protests were sparked by the Trump administration’s recent actions, including the deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles and the prosecution of political opponents. Demonstrators were also upset over the president’s attacks on the media and his perceived authoritarian tendencies. As one protester, Stephanie, a 36-year-old hospital worker, told AFP, “This president is a disgrace, and I hope there will be millions in the street today.”

Protests Span the Globe, with International Support

The “No Kings” protests were not limited to the United States, as crowds gathered outside US embassies in Berlin, Rome, Paris, and Sweden to show solidarity with the protesters. Photos from these events showed protesters holding signs denouncing fascism and dictatorships. In Rome, Democrats Abroad, the global arm of the American Democratic Party, organized a protest at Piazza Santi Apostoli, while in London, a crowd of mainly American anti-Trump protesters held signs outside the US Embassy.

In the United States, protests were scheduled in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., as well as in smaller towns across the country. In Chicago’s Grant Park, Democratic Congresswoman Delia Ramirez led the crowd in a chant, “When I say people, you say power!” Ramirez, who is the proud daughter of Guatemalan immigrants, emphasized the importance of speaking out against the president’s policies.

Republican Response: Dismissal and Criticism

President Trump’s response to the protests was muted, with the president telling Fox News that he was not a king and that the protests were misplaced. However, top Republican surrogates, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Republican lawmaker Tom Emmer, dismissed the event as a “Hate America Rally” and referred to participants as the “terrorist wing” of the Democratic Party. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott also announced increased police presence and National Guard deployments in anticipation of the protests.

In contrast, top Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer encouraged demonstrators to let their voices be heard, saying, “Do not let Donald Trump and Republicans intimidate you into silence. Speak out, use your voice, and exercise your right to free speech.” The senator’s comments reflected the widespread support for the protests among Democrats and other opponents of the president’s policies.

A Call to Action: Exercising the Right to Free Speech

The “No Kings” protests served as a reminder of the importance of exercising the right to free speech and assembly in the United States. As the demonstrations showed, millions of Americans are willing to take to the streets to express their outrage and condemnation of the president’s policies. The protests also highlighted the deep divisions within the country, with Republicans and Democrats holding sharply differing views on the president’s actions and the role of protests in American democracy.
