Deion Sanders Reveals Details About Son Shedeur’s NFL Draft Experience
Deion Sanders, a legendary NFL player and coach, has shared insight into his son Shedeur Sanders’ experience during the 2025 NFL draft. According to Deion, Shedeur was contacted by at least three teams, including the Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, and Cleveland Browns, before being selected by the Browns in the fifth round.
Shedeur Sanders, a former Colorado quarterback, was initially considered a potential first-round pick but ultimately fell to the Browns at No. 144 overall. This was after the Browns had already selected former Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third round. The circumstances surrounding Shedeur’s draft have been the subject of much speculation, with reports suggesting that he turned down opportunities to be drafted by the Ravens and Eagles.
Reports of Shedeur Turning Down Other Teams
Earlier this month, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Ravens had planned to draft Shedeur with the No. 141 overall pick, but he informed them that he did not want to sit behind quarterback Lamar Jackson, a two-time league MVP. Similarly, former NFL quarterback Cam Newton stated on his podcast “4th&1” that he had heard the Eagles were also interested in drafting Shedeur, but the presence of superstar quarterback Jalen Hurts may have been a deterrent.
Deion Sanders confirmed these reports during an appearance on the “New Heights” podcast, hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce. He revealed that the Eagles, Ravens, and Browns had all expressed interest in Shedeur, saying, “Philly called us on draft day… Baltimore and the Browns. … I played for Baltimore, so me and [Ravens executive vice president of player development] Ozzie [Newsome] are cool … and he wanted to talk to Shedeur as well as he wanted to talk to me.”
Deion Sanders Defends His Son’s Decision
Deion Sanders defended Shedeur’s decision to turn down opportunities to be drafted by teams with established quarterbacks, stating, “Who comes in with that mindset? … When have the pros ever developed anybody? By the time you get to the NFL, they expect you to know what you need to do and to do it, or somebody else gonna get in there and do it.” He emphasized the importance of being prepared and patient, advising Shedeur to wait for his opportunity to shine.
Currently, Shedeur sits behind 40-year-old veteran Joe Flacco and 24-year-old Gabriel on the Browns’ depth chart. Despite not having seen the field during the regular season, Deion Sanders is confident that his son’s patience will pay off soon. He said, “It’s coming up… I got a prediction. I ain’t telling nobody. I got a feeling when it’s gonna go down. But it’s gonna go down this year. He gonna get a shot.”
