According to Southfield Police Chief Elvin V. Barren, a recent Christmas Day shooting at an apartment complex in Southfield, Michigan, has left two people dead, and the investigation has revealed a disturbing trend of unreported domestic violence. The friend arrived with her 20-year-old boyfriend, who was carrying a 9-millimeter handgun. When the 30-year-old boyfriend returned and kicked down the door, a shootout ensued, resulting in the death of the 20-year-old man.

Chief Barren expressed concern that neither the victim nor her friend called 911 during the incident, highlighting the need for education on the importance of seeking help in domestic violence cases. The victim had a history of domestic violence in her relationship and had previously been assaulted by her boyfriend. However, she chose not to call 911, citing her relationship with the suspect’s 3-year-old child and her desire to avoid having him arrested.
The incident ultimately resulted in the death of the 20-year-old man and the 30-year-old boyfriend, who was shot eight times. The 23-year-old woman survived with a gunshot wound to her thumb, and the 3-year-old child was reunited with his biological mother. An investigation into the purchase of the AR-15 rifle used in the shooting has been opened by the ATF.
