Minneapolis School Shooting Survivor Faces Long Road to Recovery

For the 15 young students still recovering from the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, there’s a long and challenging road to healing ahead. The traumatic event has left an indelible mark on the lives of these students, their families, and the community at large.

This is especially true for 10-year-old Weston Halsne, a student who shared his harrowing story with WCCO’s Caroline Cummings and news stations across the country just hours after the attack that claimed the lives of 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski. Halsne’s bravery and resilience in the face of unimaginable horror have inspired many, and his story serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence on innocent lives.

A Heroic Act of Friendship

Halsne credited his friend, Victor, for saving his life after he laid over him as a human shield during the shooting. However, doctors recently discovered a bullet fragment lodged in Halsne’s neck, dangerously close to an artery. This devastating revelation has added a new layer of complexity to Halsne’s recovery, and he will need surgery to remove the fragment. His family has started a GoFundMe to help cover the medical costs associated with his treatment.

Halsne recounted the moment the shooter fired through the church’s stained-glass windows, saying he was just two seats away and could feel something like “gunpowder on his neck.” He also shared a special message for his friend Victor, saying, “I hope you’re OK and I’m praying for you.” This heartfelt message is a testament to the strong bond of friendship and the human spirit’s capacity for compassion and empathy.

A Community in Mourning

Halsne’s grandfather, Michael Simpson, spoke with WCCO on Wednesday afternoon, expressing his outrage and sadness over the senseless act of violence. He said, “Inexplainable and it happens way too much. And when it happens to your own children, then you’re going to think very differently about this. There’s only one way to think about it. There’s nothing this precious little boy ever did to deserve this.” Simpson’s words echo the sentiments of a community in mourning, grappling with the aftermath of a tragedy that has left deep scars.

As the community comes together to support the victims and their families, there are ways to help.
