Even ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ can’t carry 2025 field workplace out of pandemic-crisis doldrums

2025 Box Office Performance: A Year of Ups and Downs

The year 2025 has been a mixed bag for the film industry, with some notable successes and failures. As the latest “Avatar” film, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” hit theaters, many were hoping it would boost the year’s box office numbers. However, despite its impressive global gross of over $472 million, the film couldn’t single-handedly salvage the year’s disappointing conclusion.

According to Comscore, a movie data firm, the total box-office revenue in the U.S. and Canada for 2025 is expected to be around $8.87 billion, a mere 1.5% increase from the previous year’s $8.74 billion. More concerning is the fact that 2025’s domestic box-office haul is projected to be down over 20% compared to 2019, before the pandemic altered movie-going habits and accelerated the growth of streaming services.

Decline in Theatrical Attendance

The main issue facing the industry is the decline in theatrical attendance. As of December 25, an estimated 760 million tickets had been sold, according to EntTelligence, a media and entertainment data firm. This is a significant drop from the previous year’s total of over 800 million tickets sold. The lack of compelling releases and the struggle of smaller titles to gain traction have contributed to this decline.

Industry experts and theater owners point to the uneven quality and frequency of releases as a major factor in the dips in the calendar, putting extra pressure on other movies to perform. The once-reliable genres of comedies and dramas are now facing a tougher time in theaters, and female moviegoers, who flocked to see “Barbie” in 2023, were underserved in 2025, with few female-focused films being released.

Performance of Big-Name Stars and Films

Even big-name stars like Margot Robbie, Colin Farrell, Dwayne Johnson, and Sydney Sweeney couldn’t prop up attendance for films like “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” “The Smashing Machine,” and “Christy,” all of which flopped. Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” also stalled domestically, grossing only $71 million, despite its critical acclaim and stacked cast list.

The challenge facing Hollywood is how to reconcile the budgets of these films with their potential earnings in theaters and through streaming. As Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore, notes, “The budgets of these films need to be aligned with their potential earnings, both in theaters and down the road, in streaming.”

Bright Spots and Future Prospects

Despite the overall disappointing year, there were some bright spots, including the success of young audiences and the mainstreaming of anime. Warner Bros. Pictures’ “A Minecraft Movie” and Walt Disney Co.’s live-action adaptation “Lilo & Stitch” were among the top-grossing domestic films of the year, with both collecting over $423 million in the U.S. and Canada.

The increasing popularity of anime was also evident, with Sony Pictures’ “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle” grossing $134 million domestically and $715 million globally. As Tom Rothman, chair and CEO of Sony Pictures’ motion picture group, notes, “The mainstreaming of anime at the theatrical box office is a significant part of what happened this year and a good sign for the future.”

Looking ahead to 2026, industry insiders and theater owners are more optimistic, with several big films set to release, including Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” Disney and Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Doomsday,” and Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Three.” However, the uncertainty surrounding the impending Warner Bros. deal and its potential impact on movie releases remains a concern.
