Government Shutdown: Federal Workers Share Their Concerns
The ongoing U.S. government shutdown has left roughly 750,000 federal workers furloughed, with many more required to work without pay. As the shutdown continues, these workers are expressing concern about the impact on their finances, colleagues, and the American public. According to a report by CBS News, federal workers are facing significant uncertainty and anxiety due to the shutdown.
One of the primary concerns for federal workers is the lack of pay. James Kirwan, an attorney with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), stated that “no pay has me anxious because none of us have any idea how long the shutdown is going to go on for.” Kirwan, who has been with the NLRB for three years, emphasized that the longer the shutdown lasts, the more debt people will have to incur to survive. He also noted that federal workers making under $50,000 a year and federal contractors are particularly vulnerable, as they have no guarantee of backpay.
Impact on Finances and Morale
The shutdown is not only affecting federal workers’ finances but also their morale. MT Snyder, a field examiner with the NLRB, said that the shutdown is hampering the board’s efforts to investigate employee claims of unfair labor practices and other workplace disputes. Snyder emphasized that “people aren’t able to get justice” due to the shutdown, which is causing a “huge psychological toll” on federal workers. Another federal employee, who works for the Department of Veterans Affairs, stated that the shutdown is further sapping workers’ morale, causing a “moral injury” that comes with being a federal worker.
Despite the challenges, many federal workers remain committed to their jobs and the value of government service. Kirwan stated that “while taking on that additional debt and loans is certainly painful, if it results in jobs and my agency being saved and strengthened, I’ll take that deal any day.” Similarly, the Department of Veterans Affairs employee emphasized that she intends to continue working for the federal government, despite the difficulties caused by the shutdown.
Seeking a Resolution
The White House has blamed congressional Democrats for the stalemate, stating that “the Trump Administration is encouraging the Democrats to stop the pain and reopen the government.” However, the office of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer did not immediately respond to a request for comment. As the shutdown continues, federal workers and the American public are eagerly awaiting a resolution to the crisis.
