Fire Guts Prior Lake Mosque, Cause Remains Under Investigation

A devastating fire broke out at the Masjid Hamza Al-Mahmood Foundation, a mosque and school in Prior Lake, Minnesota, in the early hours of Monday morning. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but Islamic community leaders have urged mosques across the state to be vigilant. The fire department responded to the incident at 2:22 a.m. and found visible flames coming through the roof upon arrival.

Investigation Underway

The Prior Lake Fire Department reported that firefighters were forced to exit the building due to the extent of the fire, and a portion of the roof subsequently collapsed. Fortunately, no one was in the building at the time, and there were no injuries to the public or firefighters. The structure, which formerly housed a Christian church, is home to the Baitul Hikmah Academy, a school that serves over 200 children.

Given the religious nature of the institution, a full investigation will be conducted by the state fire marshal and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Council on American–Islamic Relations (CAIR) for Minnesota, stated that alerts have been sent to mosques throughout the state as a precautionary measure, despite the unknown cause of the fire.

Rising Concerns and Tensions

The incident occurs amidst rising tensions and concerns within the Muslim community in Minnesota. According to Hussein, there have been over 40 attacks on mosques in the state over the past four years, with 16 incidents reported in 2024 alone. The community is experiencing “elevated fear and anxiety,” particularly in light of recent events and rhetoric.

The fire also follows President Donald Trump’s recent immigration crackdown against Minnesota’s Somali community, which has sparked controversy and criticism. The president’s actions have been linked to a series of fraud cases involving state government social services programs, with many defendants having roots in East Africa.
