Huntington Beach Helicopter Crash Leaves Five Injured
A devastating helicopter crash occurred in Huntington Beach on Saturday, leaving five people injured. The incident happened as the city was preparing for a car and helicopter show, with the helicopter crashing onto palm trees and the stairwell of a pedestrian bridge.
The helicopter, a Bell 222, was being piloted by its owner, Eric Nixon, who was planning to showcase the aircraft at the annual Cars ’n Copters event on Sunday. The event features exotic cars and aircraft from private owners, law enforcement, and the military.
Crash Details and Injuries
According to eyewitnesses, the helicopter’s tail rotor flew off moments before the crash, which occurred in front of hundreds of spectators. Two people were pulled from the aircraft, and three people were injured on the ground, including a child. All five victims were hospitalized, with Nixon suffering from broken ribs, crushed vertebrae, and several bruises.
Videos taken at the scene show bystanders pulling a child from beneath the wreckage and rushing the boy to safety. The crash was described as “like something in a nightmare” by witness Kurt Johnston.
A Federal Aviation Administration employee was seen inspecting the crash site, and the incident has been reported to the National Transportation Safety Board. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Nixon’s Instagram account, which features videos of him performing stunts in helicopters, stated that he and his passenger were safe after the crash. However, the full extent of their injuries is not yet known.
The Bell 222 helicopter, which was involved in the crash, is a type of aircraft that was made famous by the 1980s television drama “Airwolf.” The show revolved around a high-technology attack helicopter, code-named Airwolf, and its crew.
