Forest Lake faculty board names three finalists to fill emptiness

Forest Lake School Board Narrows Down Candidate List After Contentious Meeting

Following an eight-hour meeting of the Forest Lake Area Schools board that failed to fill a vacancy, the board met again and narrowed the candidate list down to three. The decision was made after a unanimous vote to rescind a previous resolution that had hindered the process.

Board member Jill Christenson described the previous meeting as “extremely difficult” and “unnecessary,” stating that “a lot of trust has been broken.” The board’s inability to agree on a candidate had led to a stalemate, with other agenda items being put on hold due to the language used in the Nov. 20 resolution defining the vacancy-filling process.

A New Path Forward

The board’s decision to rescind the resolution allowed them to move forward with the process. Candidates who received at least four votes would now be considered for the vacancy. The three candidates moving forward are Andi Courneya, Princesa Hansen, and Paul Pease. Candidates Scot Doboszenski, Laura Ndirangu, and Jim Smith were eliminated from consideration due to lack of majority support, while Kenneth Rutford and Daniel Tuott received fewer than four yes votes.

Board members took the opportunity to thank the applicants for their patience and apologize for the uncertainty and tension that had arisen during the process. “We do not want that to happen again,” said board member Gail Theisen. “We’re here for our students and our district, and we’re very passionate about that, so let’s just continue down that road of positivity and trying to build relationships with each other.”

Reflection and Next Steps

Board Chairman Curt Rebelein acknowledged the challenges of presiding over a meeting with disagreement and gridlock. He suggested that now that the candidates have been narrowed down to three, the board and public can take time to reflect on the finalists. The next steps will be defined by Friday and presented at the next board meeting on Dec. 18.
