Former Gophers assistant Joe Rossi fighting Michigan State

Former Gophers Defensive Coordinator Joe Rossi Faces Challenges with Michigan State

Former Gophers defensive coordinator Joe Rossi is having a tough season with Michigan State, with the team ranking last in scoring in the 18-team Big Ten Conference, allowing 32.5 points per game, and 15th in total defense, giving up 380 yards per game. This has led to a 3-5 record for the Spartans this year and an overall 8-12 record in East Lansing under head coach Jonathan Smith.

Despite the challenges, Rossi has made adjustments, including moving from the coaches’ booth to the sideline for Michigan State’s 31-20 loss to then-No. 25 Michigan. This move was appreciated by Coach Smith, who noted that the defensive effort was improved, with players showing passion throughout the game. However, the team still struggled, allowing 276 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground, leading to their fifth straight conference loss.

Rossi’s Connection to the Gophers

Rossi left Minnesota after the 2023 season but remains in touch with Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck through text messages and encounters on the recruiting trail. Fleck expressed respect for Rossi, acknowledging the significant contributions he made to the University of Minnesota program. He also praised Rossi’s personal qualities, describing him as a great husband, father, and man.

The Gophers themselves are coming off a 41-3 loss to Iowa, a game where their plan to punt the ball out of bounds to prevent Hawkeyes returner Kaden Wetjen from getting his hands on the ball was not effectively executed. Punter Tom Weston managed to kick only two of his seven punts out of bounds, allowing Wetjen four returns for 80 total yards, including a 50-yard return for a touchdown.

Looking Ahead to the Next Game

Fleck offered no update on the health status of running back Darius Taylor, who left the game against Iowa after one carry and three total snaps. If Taylor is unable to play against Michigan State, the team will likely rely on redshirt freshman Fame Ijeboi and graduate transfer Cam Davis in the backfield. Given Michigan State’s struggles in rushing defense, ranking 14th in the Big Ten, allowing 149 yards per game, the Gophers may still be able to muster a ground game this weekend.
