USC Women’s Basketball Team Secures Victory Over California
The University of Southern California (USC) women’s basketball team emerged victorious against the University of California, winning 61-57 in the Invisalign Bay Area Women’s Classic on Sunday. Freshman Jazzy Davidson played a crucial role in the team’s success, scoring a season-high 24 points, including a go-ahead layup with 4:05 remaining in the game.
Key Plays and Performances
Davidson’s layup sparked a 6-0 burst, which helped the Trojans take control of the game. Teammate Londynn Jones followed up with a jumper, and the Trojans’ defense made key plays to counter each Cal threat. USC’s Kennedy Smith made a significant steal with 43.8 seconds left, intercepting a bad pass from Cal’s Sakima Walker. Davidson shot 9 for 21, including three three-pointers, and scored 14 points by halftime, helping USC lead 31-28.
The Trojans’ defense forced 18 turnovers, resulting in 15 points, while holding Cal to just one three-pointer out of 11 attempts. Walker led the Golden Bears with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Lulu Twidale and Taylor Barnes each scored 11 points. The game marked a reunion of longtime Pac-12 rivals at the Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors.
Coaching and Team Background
The game featured USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb, who previously led the Cal program to its first Final Four in the 2012-13 season, against her former team. Gottlieb coached the Golden Bears from 2011-2019 before joining the Trojans. The Trojans have completed their nonconference schedule, which included wins over top-25 opponents North Carolina State and Washington.
USC’s victory marked a significant win, with the team set to open Big Ten play on Monday at Nebraska. For more information on the game and the USC women’s basketball team, visit Here
