Natural Gas Line Rupture in Castaic Causes 5 Freeway Closure and Shelter-in-Place Order
A natural gas line rupture in Castaic prompted the closure of the 5 Freeway for nearly four hours on Saturday, while area residents were ordered to shelter in place due to the potential risks associated with the leak. The incident occurred near Ridge Route Road and Pine Crest Place, just south of Northlake Hills Elementary School, and was reported to the fire department around 4:20 p.m.
As fire and hazmat crews worked to seal the leak from a 34-inch Southern California Gas Company transmission pipeline, the smell of rotten eggs crept across large swaths of the Santa Clarita and San Fernando valleys. The smell was strong enough to reach the L.A. County Fire Department Station 149, a mile down the road, and was also reported by multiple residents in the north San Fernando Valley.
Response and Containment Efforts
The Los Angeles County Fire Department and SoCalGas worked together to contain the leak, with a hazmat task force assisting in the efforts. The shelter-in-place orders, which spanned roughly 15 square miles of Castaic, advised residents to close all doors, windows, and vents, and shut off HVAC systems. After SoCalGas shut off both sides of the broken gas line, the hazmat task force worked with SoCalGas crews and firefighters to contain residual leaks.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) closed all lanes of the 5 Freeway near Castaic from roughly 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., diverting northbound traffic to State Route 126 and southbound traffic to State Route 138. The closure caused significant traffic congestion, with some motorists stuck for hours and resorting to extreme measures to relieve themselves.
Investigation and Aftermath
SoCalGas has not yet determined the cause of the break, but noted that significant land movement had been observed near the rupture. The company received no reports of residential natural gas customers experiencing outages due to the rupture. The shelter-in-place orders were lifted around 9:50 p.m., and there were no injuries reported in the incident, according to Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Brian Kight.
The incident highlights the importance of pipeline safety and the need for regular maintenance and inspections to prevent such incidents. As the investigation into the cause of the rupture continues, residents and authorities alike are left to wonder what could have been done to prevent the incident.
