Google’s Gemini Surges Ahead: A New Era in the Chatbot Race

Google’s Gemini is experiencing a period of rapid growth, with its user base expanding at a rate that is outpacing ChatGPT’s. According to recent data from Sensor Tower, Gemini’s global monthly active users increased by approximately 30% between August and November, roughly six times the growth rate of ChatGPT. This surge in popularity can be attributed to the release of Gemini 3, Google’s latest A.I. model, which has been shown to outperform GPT-5 on several key metrics.

Gemini’s Growth Across Web and Mobile

Gemini is gaining ground across both web and mobile platforms. Global web traffic to Gemini doubled during the August–November period, compared with a 1% increase for ChatGPT, according to Sensor Tower. Mobile downloads of Gemini rose at about twice the rate of ChatGPT during that period. User engagement is also on the rise, with Gemini users now spending around 11 minutes per day in the app, more than double the time logged in March.

Additionally, Sensor Tower estimates that twice as many U.S. Android users access Gemini through the operating system itself rather than the standalone app—a built-in distribution channel that ChatGPT lacks, despite its integration into Apple’s iOS. This built-in advantage has contributed to Gemini’s rapid growth and has helped to close the gap with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Remains the Most Widely Used Chatbot

Despite Gemini’s rapid growth, ChatGPT remains the most widely used chatbot. According to Sam Altman, ChatGPT had more than 800 million weekly users in October, a figure that has since grown to nearly 900 million, according to The Information, which cited a source familiar with the company’s internal data. However, Gemini’s growth rate suggests that it may soon challenge ChatGPT’s dominance in the chatbot market.

Antitrust Scrutiny Mounts

As Gemini rapidly expands its footprint, regulators are pressing Google on whether its advantage stems from technological innovation or from market power. Authorities are examining whether Google unfairly diverts traffic away from publishers and limits competitors’ access to comparable data. The European Commission has opened a formal antitrust investigation into whether Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode misuse publisher content without compensation, thereby bolstering the company’s market dominance.

The inquiry follows a July complaint from the Independent Publishers Alliance, which argues that Google’s A.I. summaries siphon revenue from news outlets. The EU probe fits into a broader pattern of scrutiny under the Digital Markets Act, including earlier penalties tied to Android and Google’s advertising practices. As the chatbot market continues to evolve, it is likely that regulatory scrutiny will play an increasingly important role in shaping the competitive landscape.
