Gophers Football: Winning Ugly, But Getting the Job Done

The Minnesota Gophers football team has improved to 2-1 in Big Ten play, thanks to a come-from-behind, 27-20 homecoming win over Purdue on Saturday. While the team’s two conference wins may not be the most impressive, they have shown resilience and determination to take care of the football and be more disciplined than their opponents.

The Gophers’ win over Purdue was largely due to their ability to capitalize on turnovers, scoring 10 points off them. Despite being outgained by nearly 200 yards and possessing the ball for nine fewer minutes, Minnesota’s defense held strong, with defensive back Koi Perich scoring a touchdown on an interception return. As head coach P.J. Fleck noted, “That’s college football. You check the scores today? Gophers won, right? That is all I care about.”

A Weekend of Upsets in the Big Ten

The Big Ten conference saw several upsets over the weekend, with preseason national title contender Penn State falling to 0-3 in conference play after a 22-21 home loss to Northwestern. Rutgers, the Gophers’ other conference win, lost 38-19 to Washington, while Southern California ran past then-No. 15 Michigan 31-13. The most lopsided Big Ten game of the weekend was Wisconsin’s 37-0 homecoming loss to Iowa, the Badgers’ first home shutout since 1980.

Wisconsin’s loss has put head coach Luke Fickell’s job in jeopardy, with the team falling to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in Big Ten play. Fickell apologized to his team and fans, stating, “That’s as low as it can be. I apologize. I apologize to our guys to not be ready, to not have them ready.” The Badgers’ struggles are expected to continue, with No. 1 Ohio State and Oregon up next.

Gophers Look to Improve Against Nebraska

While the Gophers may not be perfect, they have shown signs of improvement, particularly in their ability to take care of the football and be more disciplined. However, they will need to address their blocking breakdowns and missed tackles if they hope to compete against stronger teams. Their next game is against Nebraska, who came back to win 34-31 at Maryland. The Cornhuskers will come to Minnesota as a 5.5-point favorite, and the Gophers will need to create more in the running game and tackle better on defense if they hope to snap a five-game losing streak in the series.

As the Gophers look to improve their record, they will need to focus on their strengths and address their weaknesses. With five more games apiece until the Battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe on Nov. 29, Minnesota has the opportunity to make a push for a successful season.
