How the Minnesota Vikings Are Helping the Gophers Football Team Succeed

The concept of “One Minnesota” has been gaining momentum since 2018, with state government initiatives and sports teams embracing the idea of unity and cooperation. The Gophers football team, in particular, has benefited from the Minnesota Vikings’ willingness to share their expertise and resources.

Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck has expressed his gratitude to Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell for providing his team with access to their facilities and coaching staff. This includes watching practices and sitting down with the NFL staff at different times of the year. The Vikings have also been supportive of the Gophers’ annual Pro Day, with many of their staff members attending the event.

A Unique Partnership

What sets the Vikings apart from other NFL teams is their willingness to collaborate with a local college football team. Despite being a cutthroat industry, the Vikings have taken a proactive approach to building a relationship with the Gophers. Fleck believes that this partnership is a testament to the “One Minnesota” concept, where both teams can benefit from each other’s expertise and resources.

The Gophers have already seen the benefits of this partnership, with their offensive coordinator Greg Harbaugh incorporating a red-zone concept used by O’Connell and his staff. Additionally, new defensive coordinator Danny Collins has lifted some of the versatile sub packages used by the Vikings’ defensive coordinator Brian Flores. The Gophers have also sought the Vikings’ advice on how to implement helmet communications between coaches and players, which was introduced by the NCAA in 2024.

A Win-Win Situation

The partnership between the Vikings and the Gophers is a win-win situation for both teams. The Vikings have been able to scout and recruit talented players from the Gophers, such as quarterback Max Brosmer, who signed with the team as an undrafted free agent. The Gophers, on the other hand, have gained valuable insights and expertise from the Vikings’ coaching staff, which has helped them to improve their game.

As Fleck noted, the partnership between the two teams is a rare example of cooperation between an NFL team and a college football team. However, it is a testament to the “One Minnesota” concept, where both teams can benefit from each other’s expertise and resources. With the Vikings’ support, the Gophers are well on their way to becoming a top-tier college football team.
