Gordon Ramsay’s Urgent Reminder: Wear Sunscreen This Holiday Weekend
Gordon Ramsay, the renowned Michelin-starred celebrity chef, has a crucial message for his fans this holiday weekend: don’t forget to wear sunscreen. In a recent Instagram post, Ramsay revealed that he was diagnosed with skin cancer and underwent surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma from the side of his face.
Ramsay shared two photos, one showing a bandage stretching from his cheek to his neck, and another close-up image displaying stitch marks directly below his earlobe. In the caption, he expressed gratitude to the medical team at The Skin Associates for their prompt and effective treatment. “Grateful and so appreciative for the incredible team at The Skin Associates and their fast reactive work on removing this Basal Cell Carcinoma thank you! Please don’t forget your sunscreen this weekend,” he wrote.
Importance of Sun Protection and Early Detection
Ramsay’s post served as a cautionary reminder about the importance of sun protection and early detection of skin cancer. According to the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, skin cancers are among the most common cancers diagnosed worldwide, with over 1.5 million new cases estimated in 2022. Basal cell carcinoma, the type of skin cancer Ramsay was diagnosed with, is a non-melanoma skin cancer and the most common overall, says Elizabeth Bahar Houshmand, a double board certified dermatologist based in Dallas.
Houshmand emphasizes that early detection is key, and preventative measures such as wearing sunscreen and SPF clothing can significantly reduce the risk of skin cancer. “It’s generally slow-growing and rarely spreads to other parts of the body, and with early detection and treatment the cure rate is very high,” she says. “Always see your dermatologist if you see an irregularity that’s not going away. Don’t wait. And protect yourself — I like an SPF of 50 or greater and apply it 15 minutes before going outside.”
Ramsay’s History of Sharing Health Issues and Cautionary Advice
This is not the first time Ramsay has shared his health issues on social media. Last year, he posted a video on Instagram after being involved in a bicycle accident in Connecticut, urging his followers to “WEAR A HELMET.” Ramsay’s willingness to share his personal experiences and offer cautionary advice has made him a trusted and authoritative figure in the entertainment and health industries.
As the holiday weekend approaches, Ramsay’s reminder to wear sunscreen is a timely and important one. Whether you’re planning to fire up the grill or enjoy outdoor activities, make sure to prioritize sun protection and take necessary precautions to reduce your risk of skin cancer.
