Hinge CEO Justin McLeod Steps Down to Launch AI-Powered Matchmaking Venture
Justin McLeod, the founder and CEO of Hinge, is leaving the company to launch a new AI-powered matchmaking venture called Overture. This move comes after McLeod spent a decade transforming Hinge into a platform focused on genuine connections rather than mere engagement. McLeod’s decision to step down as CEO is effective immediately, and he will be replaced by Jackie Jantos, the company’s current president and chief marketing officer.
According to McLeod, the idea for Overture stemmed from his concern that technological advancements, particularly AI, may be harming relationships by replacing human interaction with chatbots. “A.I. should always stand behind us, not between us,” he emphasized in a blog post announcing the new venture.
New Leadership and Funding
Overture has been in development for approximately a year, with a small team within Hinge working on the project. The company has received support from Match Group, Hinge’s parent company, which participated in Overture’s pre-seed financing and plans to lead its initial funding round early next year. Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff will also join Overture’s board.
Jackie Jantos, the new CEO of Hinge, has been with the company since 2021 and has played a key role in shaping its Gen Z-focused initiatives. Under her leadership, Hinge will continue to integrate AI-powered features to enhance user experience and safety.
Despite the challenges facing the online dating industry, Hinge has shown significant growth, with a 17% increase in paying users. This success has been driven in part by the company’s commitment to using AI to improve the matchmaking process. As McLeod transitions out of his role, he expressed confidence in the company’s future, citing its strong momentum and projected revenue of $1 billion by 2027.
