House Republicans Unveil Plan to Address Health Care Costs Amid Looming Deadline
As the year-end deadline approaches for the expiration of tax credits that will result in skyrocketing premiums for over 20 million Americans, House Republican leaders have unveiled a plan to address health care costs. Moderate Republicans have been pushing for a vote on separate legislation to extend the tax credits for one to two years with reforms, while Democrats have advocated for a three-year extension without reforms. The Republican plan allows for a vote on an amendment to extend the expiring tax credits, but it is unclear whether it will have enough support to pass.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, has expressed opposition to the GOP proposal, calling it an “11th hour measure” that is “not designed to secure bipartisan support.” Jeffries stated that House Democrats will continue to fight to protect the healthcare of the American people and are willing to work with Republicans who want to prevent the ACA tax credits from expiring at the end of the month.
Uncertainty Surrounds the Plan’s Prospects
The House Rules Committee is set to take up the package on Tuesday afternoon, with a potential floor vote as soon as Tuesday evening or Wednesday. However, it is unclear whether the plan has enough support to survive a floor vote. The proposal’s fate remains uncertain, with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle expressing concerns and criticisms.
