If somebody’s at all times late, is it time blindness, or are they only being impolite?

Understanding Time Blindness: The Struggle with Chronic Lateness

Chronic lateness is a common problem that affects many individuals, causing stress, anxiety, and strained relationships. For some, it’s a habitual behavior that’s hard to break, while for others, it’s a symptom of a underlying condition. Alice Lovatt, a musician and group-home worker from Liverpool, England, knows this struggle all too well. She was always getting in trouble for being late as a kid, and it wasn’t until she was diagnosed with ADHD at 22 that she discovered she had “time blindness,” a condition that makes it difficult to estimate the time it takes to complete tasks or understand how much time has passed.

Russell Barkley, a retired clinical neuropsychologist at the University of Massachusetts, is credited with linking time impairment to individuals with ADHD or autism, referring to it as “temporal myopia” in 1997. Stephanie Sarkis, a psychotherapist in Tampa Bay, Florida, explains that time blindness is related to executive function, which occurs in the frontal lobes of the brain, and is a well-documented characteristic of many people with ADHD. “Anyone can have issues with running late, but with ADHD, there’s functional impairment,” Sarkis says. “It impacts family life, social life, work, money management, all areas of life.”

The Difference Between Time Blindness and Disorganization

The recent social media debate surrounding time blindness has sparked a discussion about where to draw the line between a genuine condition and someone who is simply disorganized or rude. Sarkis emphasizes that if a person’s chronic tardiness is part of a larger pattern of symptoms, it could be evidence of a treatable disorder. However, not everyone who is chronically late has ADHD or a built-in excuse. Jeffrey Meltzer, a therapist in Bradenton, Florida, suggests that examining the underlying reason for lateness is crucial. Some people may be late due to anxiety, while others may feel a sense of entitlement or lack of control over their lives.

Meltzer recommends creating a “coping card” to help individuals identify the underlying reason for their lateness and develop strategies to overcome it. For example, if someone is late due to anxiety, they can write down a reframed thought about their anxiety and the consequences of being late. By acknowledging the underlying issue, individuals can begin to make changes and develop more effective time management skills.

Strategies for Managing Time Blindness

Whether or not someone has ADHD, they are still responsible for their actions, says Sarkis. The good news is that interventions that help individuals with ADHD can also work for those without the condition. Using a smartwatch to set alerts, breaking tasks into smaller parts, and resisting the urge to cram too many activities into one day can all help. Lovatt has found success with using a time management app and making granular lists of how long tasks take. By understanding the time it takes to complete tasks, individuals can better plan their day and reduce stress.

By acknowledging the complexities of time blindness and seeking help, individuals can develop more effective strategies for managing their time and reducing stress. As Lovatt notes, “It doesn’t work, like, 100% of the time. But generally, I am a lot more reliable now.” For more information on time blindness and strategies for managing it, visit Here.
