Severe Weather Causes Road Collapse in New York
Thunderstorms rolled through New York City on Saturday, sending some folks scrambling for cover in the wet streets. The heavy rain caused significant damage to infrastructure, including a road collapse on the Saw Mill River Parkway Southbound in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
Road Closure and Damage Assessment
The Dobbs Ferry Fire Department reported that the Saw Mill River Parkway Southbound between Lawrence Street in Dobbs Ferry and Farragut Avenue in Hastings is closed due to the collapse. According to the New York State Department of Transportation, crews were immediately dispatched to address the damage near Exit 113 caused by this weekend’s rainy weather.
The fire department shared photos of the damage to the parkway, showing large pieces of the road out of place. The FOX Forecast Center reported that communities near Hastings and Dobbs Ferry saw more than 1 inch of rain, including nearly 2 inches in Scarsdale between Friday and Saturday.
Reopening Efforts and Traffic Impact
The parkway is back open northbound, and the department said all efforts are being made to reopen the southbound lanes. This area sees average daily traffic of 47,000 vehicles and is not traditionally prone to flooding. The closure is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.
