Megaconstellations like TeraWave transmit data between Earth and orbiting satellites without cables or cell towers, extending internet access to remote and underserved regions. This technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we store and process data, particularly in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). As AI usage explodes, data centers are straining the world’s power grids, and space is beginning to look like an attractive solution to this energy crunch. Several aerospace and tech companies, including Google, SpaceX, and Axiom Space, are exploring the idea of placing data centers in orbit, where they could draw on near-limitless solar power and radiate heat directly into space.
TeraWave’s Unique Approach and Market Competition
Unlike other satellite internet projects, such as SpaceX’s Starlink and Amazon’s Leo, TeraWave is not aimed at households. Instead, the network will serve “tens of thousands” of enterprises, government agencies, and data centers, according to Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp. This strategic approach reflects the surging importance of data centers in the age of AI and positions TeraWave as a key player in the growing market for space-based computing and data storage. However, TeraWave will face significant competition from established players like SpaceX, as well as new entrants like China’s Guowang and Qianfan megaconstellations, which are expected to include over 13,000 satellites.

TeraWave is just one of several ambitious projects underway at Blue Origin, which includes two lunar landers, a commercial space station, and a Mars orbiter. The company has also made progress on its New Glenn reusable heavy-lift rocket, designed to deploy satellites into low-Earth orbit, including Amazon’s Leo constellation and potentially TeraWave itself. With its entry into the satellite internet market, Blue Origin is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of space-based computing and data storage.
