John Mayer Delivers Emotional Eulogy for Late Grateful Dead Co-Founder Bob Weir

John Mayer delivered a heartfelt eulogy for his friend and mentor, Grateful Dead co-founder Bob Weir, during a public memorial held in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon. Weir, who passed away on January 10 at the age of 78, was remembered as a “countercultural icon” and “maestro” by Mayer.

Mayer, who shared a birthday with Weir 30 years apart, recalled how the late guitarist’s music led him to connect with Weir, resulting in a lifelong friendship and musical partnership. The two musicians formed Dead & Company, a continuation of the Grateful Dead, in 2015, along with Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Oteil Burbridge, and Jeff Chimenti.

A Lasting Legacy

Mayer remembered Weir as a music “master” and acknowledged the significant impact he had on his life and career. He also recognized the countless musicians who had shared a stage with Weir and were now mourning his loss. Weir’s passing has left a void in the music world, and Mayer noted that it will take time to come to terms with the loss.

As Mayer so eloquently put it, “We’ve only begun to make sense of what’s gone missing, and in the end, Bobby was right again.” Weir’s passing is a reminder of the profound impact one person can have on the world, and his music will continue to inspire and uplift fans for generations to come.
