DOJ Launches Investigation into UC Berkeley Protest Clashes
The Department of Justice has announced an investigation into the security measures at the University of California, Berkeley, following a series of clashes between protesters and attendees at a Turning Point USA event. The event, which took place on Monday evening, was met with resistance from anti-fascist protesters, resulting in multiple arrests and concerns over campus security.
A large group of protesters gathered outside the event, which was held at UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall, chanting slogans such as “Hey, ho, hey, ho, Turning Point has to go.” The protests led to clashes, with four people being taken into custody, according to Dan Mogulof, a spokesperson for UC Berkeley. Two people were arrested off-campus by the Berkeley Police Department, while two additional arrests were made on campus by university police.
Concerns Over Campus Security and Antifa’s Involvement
Harmeet K. Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice, expressed concerns over campus security and the involvement of Antifa, stating that she sees “several issues of serious concern regarding campus and local security and Antifa’s ability to operate with impunity in CA.” The event was Turning Point USA’s first in California since the group’s founder, Charlie Kirk, was shot and killed at Utah Valley University on September 10.
Despite the clashes, Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, emphasized that the event was well-attended, with a large group of conservatives gathering inside the UC Berkeley auditorium. Kolvet shared a video on social media showing a crowd of attendees standing up, holding placards of Charlie Kirk’s face, and chanting “Charlie Kirk! Charlie Kirk!”
Investigation and Response
The Department of Justice’s investigation into the clashes and campus security at UC Berkeley is ongoing. The university has stated that it will cooperate with the investigation, with Mogulof noting that “at this point, we’re aware of a single incident of violence between two individuals who fought with each other.” The incident has raised concerns over the safety and security of students and attendees at public events, particularly in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s death.
