Karen Huger’s Early Release from Prison: A Look into the “Real Housewives of Potomac” Star’s Journey

Karen Huger, a prominent figure on the reality TV show “Real Housewives of Potomac,” has been released from prison six months into her yearlong sentence. The 62-year-old star was sentenced in February to two years in prison, with one year suspended, after being convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) in Potomac, Maryland. According to a spokesperson for the Montgomery Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Huger was released from the Montgomery County Detention Center on Tuesday.

Background on the Incident and Conviction

In March 2024, Huger was arrested by Maryland police after she crossed a median and hit street signs, crashing her Maserati. She was booked on suspicion of DUI and other traffic violations. Following her arrest, Huger attributed the accident to grief and her mother’s 2017 death, stating that “grief comes and goes in waves, and with Mother’s Day approaching, it has felt more like a tsunami.” A Maryland jury later convicted Huger of DUI and negligent driving charges, as well as failure to control speed to avoid a collision and failure to notify authorities of an address change.

Huger’s attorney, A. Scott Bolden, expressed disappointment with the jury’s verdict but respected their decision. Amid her legal woes, Huger was absent from the “Real Housewives of Potomac” Season 9 reunion, where she appeared in a prerecorded message, discussing her entry into a private recovery program to address her struggles with antidepressants and drinking. In the message, Huger tearfully accepted full responsibility for the car accident and expressed concern for her family’s well-being.

Release and Future Prospects

Upon her release from prison, Huger waved to bystanders from her SUV as she exited the facility. Representatives for Huger did not immediately respond to requests for comment. As Huger reintegrates into her life and career, it remains to be seen how her experience will impact her future on “Real Housewives of Potomac” and other endeavors.
