Kennedy Center Christmas Eve Jazz Concert Canceled Amid Controversy Over Trump’s Name Addition
A long-standing holiday tradition at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. has been disrupted due to a controversy surrounding the addition of President Trump’s name to the facility. The Christmas Eve jazz concert, which has been a staple at the performing arts center for over 20 years, has been canceled by its host, musician Chuck Redd. Redd, a renowned drummer and vibraphone player, has been presiding over the holiday “Jazz Jams” at the Kennedy Center since 2006.
The decision to cancel the concert came after the White House announced that President Trump’s name would be added to the facility, drawing criticism from Democratic lawmakers and scholars who argue that the change violates the law. The Kennedy Center’s website and building facade now bear the revised name, “Trump-Kennedy Center.” Redd told The Associated Press that he chose to cancel the concert after seeing the name change on the website and building, citing his disagreement with the decision.
Backlash from the Kennedy Center and White House
The Kennedy Center’s vice president of public relations, Roma Daravi, responded to the cancellation, stating that artists who cancel their shows over political differences are “selfish, intolerant, and have failed to meet the basic duty of a public artist: to perform for all people.” Kennedy Center President Richard Grenell also weighed in, calling the cancellation a “political stunt” and alleging that the Jazz Jams have faced “dismal ticket sales.” The center plans to seek $1 million in damages from Redd.
The controversy surrounding the name change has drawn criticism from congressional Democrats and members of Kennedy’s family. Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio has sued over the renaming, calling it a “flagrant violation of the rule of law.” The law explicitly prohibits the board of trustees from adding any additional memorials to the site, which was named as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy after his assassination in 1963.
A Growing Trend of Artist Cancellations
This is not the first time that artists have canceled performances at the Kennedy Center since Mr. Trump’s involvement. Numerous artists, including Issa Rae and Peter Wolf, have called off their performances, and Lin-Manuel Miranda canceled a planned production of “Hamilton.” The Kennedy Center’s leadership has been overhauled, and the board has been rearranged to include Mr. Trump as its head.
