Tragedy Strikes Suriname: Knife Attack Leaves Multiple Dead, Including Children
A devastating knife attack outside the capital city of Paramaribo, Suriname, has left at least nine people dead, including five children, according to local police reports. The incident occurred in the Commewijne district, approximately 25 kilometers east of Paramaribo, in the town of Richelieu.
As reported by officials, the victims included the attacker’s own children and neighbors who attempted to intervene. According to a statement released by the Suriname Police Corps, the male suspect attempted to attack police officers who arrived at the scene and was subsequently injured during his arrest. He is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. Additionally, a sixth child and another adult were seriously injured in the attack and are being treated at a hospital in Paramaribo.
The Surinamese President, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, took to her Facebook page to express her condolences, stating that the attacker had taken the lives of his own children and neighbors. She offered words of comfort to the bereaved, saying, “I wish all the bereaved much strength, resilience, and comfort in this unimaginably difficult time.”
