Lakers lose Austin Reaves, then fall to Rockets for third consecutive loss

Date:

Lakers’ Inconsistent Performance Continues with 119-96 Loss to Rockets

The Los Angeles Lakers were optimistic about their starting lineup on Thursday with the return of Luka Doncic and Rui Hachimura from injury, restoring their normal starting unit for only the seventh time this season. However, their joy was short-lived as Austin Reaves suffered a setback due to left calf soreness, forcing him to sit out the second half.

The Lakers’ defense struggled to contain the Houston Rockets, allowing them to shoot 53% from the field. Amen Thompson led the Rockets with 26 points, while Kevin Durant scored 25, and the team out-rebounded the Lakers 48-25. This inconsistent performance on defense has been a recurring issue for the Lakers, who have lost three games in a row for the first time this season.

Injury Woes Continue to Plague the Lakers

Austin Reaves, who had missed three games with a left calf strain, returned against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday and scored 17 points off the bench. However, he played only 15 minutes in the first half against the Rockets, scoring 12 points on five-for-eight shooting, before being sidelined due to calf soreness. Reaves has been a key player for the Lakers, averaging 27.3 points per game, ranking him 11th in league scoring.

Doncic, who had been out with a lower left leg contusion, had 25 points and seven assists, while LeBron James had 18 points. Hachimura, who returned from a right groin injury management, played 28 minutes but did not score. The Lakers’ injury woes have made it challenging for the team to find consistency, with key role players Jaxson Hayes and Gabe Vincent also missing the game due to injuries.

The Lakers’ defensive struggles can be attributed to the lack of continuity due to injuries. They entered Thursday’s game allowing 117.4 points per game, 19th most in the league, and were allowing the 26th highest field-goal percentage (48.4) and the highest three-point shooting percentage (40.1). The team’s rebounding issues were also evident, averaging 40.1 rebounds per game, which is next-to-last in the league.

Coach JJ Redick Weighs in on the Lakers’ Struggles

Lakers coach JJ Redick acknowledged the challenges the team faces due to injuries and the lack of practice time. “It’s the modern NBA where there’s injuries and then there’s not a lot of time to practice,” Redick said. “So, when you have continuity, you can kind of capture what you’re trying to do and you feel comfortable and good about it.” The Lakers will need to find a way to overcome their injury woes and develop consistency if they hope to turn their season around.
