Lee Greenwood Throws His Cowboy Hat into the Ring for Super Bowl Halftime Show

Lee Greenwood, the 82-year-old country singer, has expressed his interest in performing at the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show, following a suggestion by House Speaker Mike Johnson. Greenwood stated, “I agree with Speaker Johnson. I would make a great performer for any Super Bowl show.” He also mentioned that he performs for various NFL teams every year, especially during their Salute To Service games, and will be doing halftime for the Dallas Cowboys during Monday Night Football on November 3rd.

A Replacement for Bad Bunny?

House Speaker Mike Johnson suggested that Lee Greenwood should replace Bad Bunny for the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show, stating that Bad Bunny “sounds like a terrible decision” and “not someone who appeals to a broader audience.” Johnson added that he would prefer to see “role models” like Lee Greenwood perform at the event. President Donald Trump also criticized the NFL’s decision to have Bad Bunny perform, saying “I never heard of him” and “this guy does not seem like a unifying entertainer.”

Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is one of the most-streamed artists in the world and has responded to the criticism, saying that his performance at the Super Bowl is “for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown… this is for my people, my culture, and our history.” He also fired back at his critics during his monologue on “Saturday Night Live,” teasing non-Spanish speakers and suggesting they have four months to learn.

Controversy Surrounding Bad Bunny’s Performance

Bad Bunny has sparked backlash in the past for refusing to bring his tour to the US, fearing federal agents would be outside his concerts. He told i-D magazine that “there was the issue of — like, f–king ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.” However, Trump administration officials clarified that ICE agents would be at the Feb. 8, 2026 game, whether Bad Bunny liked it or not.

Lee Greenwood, on the other hand, has a long history of performing at patriotic events, including Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration in January. He also performed at conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s memorial service in September and was appointed to the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. by President Trump.
