Life-Threatening Flash Flooding Unfolds in King County, Washington, Following Levee Failure
A devastating situation is unfolding in King County, Washington, where a Flash Flood Warning has been issued due to a levee failure, prompting evacuation orders throughout the area. According to the National Weather Service, the failure of the Green River Levee has caused flash flooding near the Green River in Tukwilla, with the warning in effect through 9 p.m. PST Monday.
The affected areas include Kent, Renton, and Tukwilla, as well as streams and drainage areas such as the Green River, Duwamish Waterway, and Cedar River. The City of Kent has reported that the levee breach has primarily impacted industrial areas, with no residential neighborhoods currently affected. However, residents in low-lying areas are advised to move to higher ground as soon as possible, with the National Weather Service urging people to “move to higher ground now” and “act quickly to protect your life.”
Response Efforts Underway
The Washington National Guard has deployed guard members to King County to provide support, while the American Red Cross is on the ground providing aid to flood victims. The Washington Department of Transportation has closed State Route 104 in both directions due to high winds, and an atmospheric river is expected to impact the area through Tuesday, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds.
This latest flooding incident comes just days after historic flooding hit the region, resulting in numerous highway closures, evacuation orders for thousands of residents, and dozens of emergency rescues.
