Los Alamitos’ Emotional Farewell: A Season of Triumph and Heartbreak

As the final whistle blew, the Los Alamitos underclassmen laid down their helmets, one by one, on the five-yard line, a poignant gesture of respect and admiration for their departing seniors. The Griffins’ junior running back, Kamden Tillis, was overcome with emotion, struggling to come to terms with the 42-21 defeat to San Diego Cathedral in the Division 1-AA regional final.

Los Alamitos coach Ray Fenton, who led his program to a remarkable 12-3 record and a Southern Section Division 2 title, summed up the mood: “I hate this moment.” The sense of loss and disappointment was palpable, but it was also a moment of reflection and gratitude. Tillis, along with his teammates, took the time to hug each senior on the goal line, sharing words of brotherhood and appreciation.

Los Alamitos defensive end Jackson Renger, who recorded a sack in the game, was particularly emotional, telling his teammates: “These are my best friends.” The bond between the players was evident, a testament to the strong team culture and camaraderie that had developed throughout the season. Renger’s sentiment was echoed by Tillis, who said: “I loved them to death.”

A Season of Resilience and Triumph

Despite the setbacks, including losses to Mission Viejo and San Clemente, the Griffins rallied, demonstrating their resilience and determination. Under the guidance of Coach Fenton, the team exceeded expectations, making it to the regional final. As Fenton noted: “When you don’t have those expectations and pressure on you to win every game, you get better every day.” The team’s progress was a testament to their hard work and dedication.

The game against San Diego Cathedral was a closely contested affair, with the Griffins taking an early 14-7 lead. However, the Dons’ larger offensive and defensive lines eventually proved too much to overcome. Tillis’ 26-yard carry brought Los Alamitos to the nine-yard line with six seconds remaining in the first half, but two incomplete passes and a missed field goal attempt meant the teams entered halftime tied at 14.
