According to authorities, the owner of Lutsen Lodge, Bryce James Campbell, 41, was arrested on Wednesday near Detroit by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and local police following a 22-month investigation into the blaze that destroyed the North Shore landmark. A criminal complaint had been filed under seal in State District Court in Grand Marais earlier that same day charging him with three counts of first-degree arson and one count of insurance fraud.
Financial Problems and Investigation
Campbell had purchased the historic lodge in 2018 for $6.75 million, but his businesses, including North Shore Resort Company, North Shore Land Company, and Shores Resort Company, had more than $14 million in past-due and near-due debts at the time of the fire. The businesses held less than $34,000 in their bank accounts. Authorities allege that Campbell intentionally set fire to the historic building in an effort to collect more than $16 million from an insurance company.

Arrest and Charges
Campbell was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree arson and one count of insurance fraud. He has been involved in numerous business-related controversies over the years and has faced several lawsuits from contractors, cabin owners, and employees seeking unpaid debts. A judge also stripped him of day-to-day control of Superior Shores in Two Harbors following a lawsuit.

Campbell has waived extradition from Michigan and will make an initial court appearance in Minnesota as soon as transport can be arranged. The BCA superintendent described it as a “methodical investigation” — one that did not have a particular breakthrough, but rather a slow trickle of evidence that eventually amounted to probable cause.
