Major winter storm impacts post-Thanksgiving journey for hundreds of thousands throughout U.S.

Winter Storm Warnings Issued for Post-Thanksgiving Travel

A major winter storm is expected to bring significant snowfall and gusty winds to the northern United States, affecting millions of travelers during the post-Thanksgiving holiday weekend. According to the National Weather Service, winter storm warnings have been issued for parts of the Midwest, Western Great Lakes, and northern Plains, with over 54 million people under winter weather alerts.

The storm is forecast to produce heavy snow and strong winds, with more than a foot of snow expected in areas of Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan. CBS News Philadelphia meteorologist Andrew Kozak notes that Arctic air will drive temperatures into the teens and 20s across the central U.S., with wind chills potentially dipping below zero before the weekend ends.

Travel Disruptions Expected

The winter storm is likely to cause significant travel disruptions, particularly for those shopping on Black Friday or traveling by air. More than 81.8 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more during the Thanksgiving holiday period, according to AAA. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is planning to screen over 3 million travelers on Sunday, which is projected to be one of the busiest travel days in TSA history.

Chicago, a major travel hub, could see 8-12 inches of snow or more, which may have a domino effect on major airports. Heavy snow is forecast for Saturday, and airlines are preparing for potential delays and cancellations. Airlines for America, the trade association for leading U.S. airlines, predicts that carriers will fly a record 31 million passengers from last Friday through this coming Monday.

Weather Conditions and Forecast

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for parts of the northern Plains states and the Great Lakes region, with snowfall totals of at least a foot expected by the end of the storm. Areas of central New York state could see a foot of snow, and gusty winds may lead to periods of blowing snow with hazardous travel conditions. Below-average and chilly temperatures are expected to hit most of the eastern and central U.S.

Snow squalls may bring quick bursts of heavy snow and dangerous, whiteout conditions for driving, particularly across the interior Northeast. The weather service notes that storms, some of them heavy, are in the forecast for the western Gulf Coast, with flash flooding possible on Saturday.
