Tragic Incident in Maplewood Apartment Leads to Fatal Stabbing and Arrest
A devastating incident occurred in a Maplewood apartment on Thursday night, resulting in the fatal stabbing of a 33-year-old man who attempted to rescue his girlfriend’s mother from her estranged husband. The mother had been allegedly held captive by her husband, Lloyd Matthew McKenzie, 52, who has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree assault.
According to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office, the events unfolded when the woman’s daughter, accompanied by her boyfriend and a cousin, arrived at the apartment to check on her mother, who had been unresponsive for a few days. Upon arrival, the father answered the door, and the mother exclaimed, “Thank you, God.” However, the situation quickly escalated when the father attempted to close the door, and the cousin intervened by jamming his foot in the doorway.
Alleged Abuse and Captivity
The mother alleged that she had been held captive by her husband for three days, during which time he used crack cocaine, strangled her, and forced her to walk around naked. She also claimed that he had taken her car keys and cellphones, restricting her freedom and ability to seek help. The mother’s statements suggest a horrific pattern of abuse and control exerted by her husband.
When the daughter and her companions arrived, McKenzie allegedly ordered the mother to put on clothes and then opened the door, stabbing the boyfriend with a serrated steak knife. The mother attempted to hide in a bedroom, but McKenzie forced his way in, standing over her with a knife. She eventually agreed to tell police that the boyfriend had a gun and that McKenzie had acted in self-defense, but later revealed that she had only done so to avoid further harm.
Investigation and Charges
After being read his Miranda rights, McKenzie spoke with police, claiming that he and his wife had been on a marijuana and crack binge and that he had wanted to stop, but she hadn’t. He alleged that the boyfriend had pointed a gun at him and pulled the trigger, but the gun didn’t fire, and that he had acted in self-defense. However, when asked to elaborate on the scuffle, he declined to answer. The investigation revealed that McKenzie has 14 prior felony convictions, including assault, burglary, and robbery.
The criminal complaint states that officers retrieved the knife with blood on it from under the mattress, and the mother’s statements, combined with the physical evidence, led to McKenzie’s arrest and charges. The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help and support for those affected.
