New Zealand Police Wait for Nature to Take Its Course in Bizarre Theft Case
In a shocking incident, a 32-year-old man in New Zealand has been accused of attempting to steal a $19,000 Fabergé octopus pendant from a jewelry store by swallowing it. The ornate pendant, inspired by the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy, is a limited-edition piece crafted from gold, painted with green enamel, and encrusted with 183 diamonds and two sapphires.
Investigation and Arrest
The alleged theft occurred on November 28 at Partridge Jewelers in Auckland, and the man was arrested minutes later. He appeared in the Auckland District Court on November 29, where he did not enter a plea on a charge of theft. According to Inspector Grae Anderson, the man underwent a medical assessment at the time of his arrest, and an officer is assigned to constantly monitor him.
The pendant, which is 8.4 centimeters (3.3 inches) tall and mounted on a stand, features an 18ct yellow gold octopus nestled inside, adorned with white diamond suckers and black diamond eyes. The store’s website describes the egg as a unique piece, with only 50 made, and it is considered a valuable item.
Waiting for Evidence to Emerge
As the investigation continues, police are waiting for nature to take its course, hoping that the pendant will eventually emerge as evidence. The accused man is due to appear in court again on December 8. In the meantime, police are taking a duty of care approach, monitoring the man’s condition given the circumstances of the alleged theft.
