Hurricane Erin Updates: Tracking the Storm’s Path and Potential Impact

Hurricane Erin is currently moving away from the northeastern U.S. coast, but its effects are still being felt. According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, swimming conditions at many U.S. East Coast beaches are likely to remain dangerous for a couple more days. As of Friday, August 22, 2025, Erin had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph and was moving northeast at 22 mph.

The storm’s center was approximately 435 miles north of Bermuda and 425 miles south-southwest of Halifax, Canada. Erin is expected to become post-tropical by tonight but remain a powerful hurricane-force low-pressure system through the weekend. The National Hurricane Center has warned that Erin’s center will pass south of Atlantic Canada today and tonight, then race across the north Atlantic waters.

Understanding Hurricane Erin’s Category and Strength

Erin, the first Atlantic hurricane of 2025, was initially a Category 1 storm but exploded to a Category 5 on Saturday before being downgraded. As of Friday, it was still a Category 1 hurricane, defined as having maximum sustained winds from 74 mph to 95 mph. The storm’s strength has fluctuated in recent days, with hurricane-force winds extending outward up to 125 miles from the center and tropical storm-force winds extending up to 370 miles from the center.

Forecast Path and Potential Impact on the U.S.

A “spaghetti map” of forecast models showed the storm skirting the Caribbean islands and remaining well off the U.S. East Coast as it moved north and curved back over the Atlantic. However, Erin’s impact was still felt in parts of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, where tropical storm conditions hit on Thursday. The storm caused coastal flooding in Virginia, and the New York City borough of Queens as well as Long Island experienced some flooding.

Rip Currents and Coastal Flooding

Rip currents are a significant threat to beachgoers, with warnings issued along the North Carolina coast. Many beaches from South Florida to New England took precautions, with some closing to swimmers. Rough ocean conditions were expected to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents, with waves of 15 feet to 20 feet forecasted for Hatteras and Ocracoke islands.
