Gabrielle Strengthens into Hurricane, Seventh Named Storm of 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Gabrielle has intensified into a hurricane, marking the seventh named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Gabrielle’s center is expected to pass east of Bermuda on Monday, with no watches or warnings currently in effect. As of the latest update, Gabrielle is situated approximately 320 miles southeast of Bermuda, moving north-northwest at a speed of 10 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, categorizing it as a Category 1 hurricane.

The NHC warns that rapid strengthening could occur over the next day or two, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring of the storm’s progress. Swells generated by Gabrielle are forecast to reach the East Coast, from North Carolina to Atlantic Canada, on Sunday, potentially causing life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. These swells are expected to continue into early next week, highlighting the importance of coastal preparedness and safety measures.

Tropical Storm Gabrielle’s Path and Potential Impact

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward approximately 140 miles from Gabrielle’s center. The storm is likely to continue its northwest trajectory through Sunday before turning north on Monday and northeast on Tuesday. This path suggests that while the storm’s center is expected to pass east of Bermuda, the island and surrounding areas should remain vigilant for any changes in the storm’s track or intensity.

The formation of Gabrielle comes about a week after the historical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, which typically runs from June 1 to November 30. Despite initial predictions by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) suggesting a busier than usual season with more named storms than average, hurricane activity has been quieter than anticipated so far.

Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook and Previous Activity

NOAA’s initial outlook for the 2025 season indicated the possibility of 13 to 19 named storms, with up to nine potentially strengthening into hurricanes, and as many as five becoming Category 5 storms. Although the agency slightly revised its outlook in August, predicting 13 to 18 named storms, including five to nine hurricanes, the season’s activity has not yet met these projections. Of the six named tropical storms that developed before Gabrielle, only Chantal made landfall in the U.S.
