Marcus Alvarado, the former baseball coach at Chatsworth High, has resigned from his position, citing the constant complaints from parents as the primary reason for his decision. Alvarado, who led the Chancellors to a 2022 City Section Open Division championship at Dodger Stadium, expressed his frustration with the “travel ball mentality” that has become prevalent in the sport.
A Coach’s Passion Lost
According to Alvarado, the relentless criticism from parents took a toll on his love for the game. “I’m just tired about hearing parents complain,” he said. “We call it travel ball mentality now. That’s not me.” This sentiment is not uncommon among coaches, who often face intense pressure from parents to win games and secure college scholarships for their children. Alvarado’s resignation serves as a reminder of the challenges coaches face in maintaining their passion for the sport while dealing with external pressures.
Alvarado’s decision to resign also highlights the importance of work-life balance. Chatsworth High has a rich baseball tradition, with eight City Section titles won under the guidance of former coach Tom Meusborn, who is now at Sierra Canyon. The school is tied with El Camino Real for the most City Section baseball titles, with nine each. Alvarado’s resignation marks the end of an era, but the school’s legacy of excellence is likely to continue.
Meanwhile, other coaching changes are taking place in the region. Gabe Cerna, the former head coach at Sun Valley Poly, has been replaced by assistant Freddy Flores, who will serve as an interim coach. Additionally, Doug Bledsoe has resigned as football coach at Narbonne after just one season, during which the team went 0-10 and was banned from the playoffs for three years due to rules violations.
