Matthew Lillard Responds to Quentin Tarantino’s Criticism of His Acting
Matthew Lillard, the actor known for his roles in “Scream” and “Scooby-Doo,” has spoken out against Quentin Tarantino’s recent comments criticizing his acting abilities. Tarantino, the acclaimed director of films like “Pulp Fiction” and “Kill Bill,” made the remarks on “The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast,” stating, “I don’t care for Matthew Lillard.” Lillard, 55, addressed the comments at GalaxyCon in Columbus, Ohio, where he was met with boos from the audience.
Lillard seemed to take the high road, saying, “Eh, whatever. Who gives a shit,” but later admitted that Tarantino’s comments had hurt his feelings. “It hurts your feelings. It f–king sucks,” he said. “And you wouldn’t say that to Tom Cruise. You wouldn’t say that to somebody who’s a top-line actor in Hollywood.” Lillard also noted the difference in his popularity between the convention circuit and Hollywood, saying, “I’m very popular in this room. I’m not very popular in Hollywood. Two totally different microcosms, right?”
Tarantino’s Comments Spark Backlash
Tarantino’s comments on “The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast” were not limited to Lillard, as he also criticized actors Owen Wilson and Paul Dano. However, his remarks about Dano were particularly scathing, with Tarantino calling him “weak sauce” and saying he was overshadowed by Daniel Day-Lewis in the film “There Will Be Blood.” The comments sparked a backlash from numerous Hollywood stars, including Ben Stiller, Simu Liu, and Matt Reeves, who all came out in support of Dano’s acting abilities.
Colleen Foy, who worked with Dano on “There Will Be Blood,” tweeted, “Paul Dano and I played brother and sister in THERE WILL BE BLOOD. His incredible performance speaks for itself.” She also noted that Tarantino had reacted positively to Dano’s performance at a screening, saying, “I sat behind Quentin Tarantino at the Cast & Crew screening and he was legit vibing with Paul’s performance. His recent comments are incongruent with his reaction that night.”
