Hamline University Welcomes New President Mayme K. Hostetter
Hamline University formally installed Mayme K. Hostetter as its 22nd president on Thursday, November 6, 2025, in a ceremony held at the university’s Hutton Arena in St. Paul. Hostetter, who has a strong background in education, brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having previously served as president of Relay Graduate School of Education in Manhattan.

A Strong Background in Education
Hostetter’s experience in education is extensive, having attended Harvard University and later earning a master of education. She also worked as an English teacher and later earned a doctor of education from Columbia University. In New York, she helped found Hunter College’s “Teacher U” and the Relay Graduate School of Education, which has roots in the charter school movement.

A Commitment to Equity and Excellence
Hostetter has been recognized for her commitment to equity and excellence in education. She was named a 2024 Presidential Leadership Scholar by the Bush, Clinton, and LBJ Foundations. Her friend Laela Sturdy, who attended Harvard University with her, praised Hostetter’s character, vision, and commitment to every student’s success.

A Bright Future for Hamline University
Hostetter assumed her duties as president on July 1 and has expressed her vision for the university’s future. She hopes to make Hamline a university where students graduate on time and feel high levels of belonging and engagement with each other.
